Happy Birthday, Speed!
Wes Stoody
(Grandson)
At the beginning of this year (2017), I was incredibly grateful to strike up an email conversation with Grandpa. Our conversation began with a discussion on the topic of “empathy”, but then changed directions many times to discussions of politics, organizing movements, the economy, and philosophy. This was an amazing opportunity to learn about Grandpa’s way of thinking and more of his personal story. Our email exchange had a huge affect on my way of thinking, stretching my views and destroying many of my preconceived notions.
I know everyone in our family (and many people beyond our family) can attest to Grandpa’s generosity. Beyond always being their for us, his generosity of knowledge, and wisdom have been invaluable to my growth.
I will forever feel lucky to have had this email exchange with Grandpa and will keep these emails as long as possible. Below are a couple of quotes from Grandpa’s emails that I thought everyone would enjoy.

“I think there is more power in acting one’s way into new ways of thinking than there is in thinking one’s way into new ways of acting.”
“If I were to do a thought experiment and imagine a movement such as you are describing, I would think first about where I am standing. I do not believe one can create a movement from “outside.” One starts by joining with those who feel the pain, see the issue, have experience of being oppressed. So, don’t try to do anything alone. You must get to know deeply those who are hurt by the system, they will help you find your voice. Your voice must come from your real experience with real people… So, to begin to “create a movement,” explore places to stand. See if you can find a way to join, to get in with those who are hurting or dissatisfied. Try to get to know and understand what folks are up against. Respond authentically.”
