You know — I can’t tell you how often Speed’s voice pops into my head — as if he’s right here in the room with me. I get stuck in a problem or relationship, and I just cannot think what to do next. What he taught me comes through clear as a bell: COMPLEXIFY IT. Almost always, it helps me find a way around or over or through whatever is confusing me. He must have told me that 40 years ago — but it still works, and I’m still grateful.

I’m grateful to him for what we were able to do for the churches, and I’m grateful to him for being my colleague. And for putting up with my voluminous shortcomings. We had a hell of a ride, didn’t we, old man???
