Happy birthday #80, Speed!
I hope this day of celebration and outpouring of warm greetings from family and friends gives you a glimmer of the impact you have on our lives in so many different ways.
When you first stepped into my apartment in SW Washington DC in 1975, you promptly made it clear that I was okay, that you were willing to let me into Paul’s life even though you had had many years with him and his family in another configuration. At that point I was a scared single mom hoping that the risks I had taken would result in long term benefits. Your affirmation that day was such an important signal that things would turn out okay. Sure some hard work would be needed. And over 40 years later, here we are.
You were also there for me in the summer of 1977 when Paul and I came to the farm within days of Benjamin’s death. I remember sitting with you and Connie talking and crying about children and the impact they have on our lives even when, as you had also experienced, they are only with us for a brief time.
More and more stories abound as the years have gone by. Books, health concerns, work victories and disasters, decisions about where to live, grown children and their issues (and their children!), politics, and so much more: these conversations have enriched my life immensely. The clarity with which you have said our time together is a treasure for you as well is a very special gift.
I look forward to many more conversations and times together.
Fond regards,
Janet Vandevender
