Happy Birthday, Speed!
Dick Riechel
(Friend from Fresno State University)

It was well over half a century ago that I first met Speed; actually, 57 years (1957). Speed had joined a fraternity at Fresno State College in which I was a member. It was the start of a long friendship. We also got together often while he studied at Cal Berkeley. Several years later, just after the Watts riots, he invited me to join him for a dinner in LA at the house of a lady that he liked very much. This was Connie. They have been a loving pair ever since.
Years later I visited their country home in Michigan. I was on my way to wander through Europe for about a year. They had a multi-acre farm where the kids had the run of the house while Connie and Speed dwelled in several rooms above the garage—a great setting.
Another fine experience was a fishing trip that Speed and I took to Lake Tsuniah in the back woods of British Columbia—days catching and eating trout; a bear in a tree next to our cabin; many bald eagles around the lake who dove at the trout we were reeling into our boat—a great thrill.
They re-located to a house near mine in Boulder Creek. We have had many great get-togethers there and continued to do so after I moved to Santa Cruz. I look forward to enjoying their company in the future.
What luck!
Dick
